Middle School

Students in the middle school program at Discovery Christian School, will be taught that growth in their individual areas of giftedness and interest are a means to glorify God. DCS is strongly committed to the integration of Biblical Principles into all areas of life and learning, and our curriculum will be rigorously viewed through a Biblical lens. A high quality academic education will be offered in a context that challenges students to do all things as unto the Lord.

Core Middle School Subjects

Grade 7 World Studies covers world cultures from 1100 AD to present. Geography, history, economics, religion, and cultures are compared.


Grade 8 The American Republic unfolds the history of the United States starting with the discovery of the New World, tracing the path of American history up to the present day. Students are guided in evaluating historical events, government, economics, and world cultures by developing biblical approaches to core values.


Grade 7 Writing & Grammar focuses on mastery of English grammar and mechanics to provide effective writing and oral communication. Parts of speech, sentence structure, writing skills, reference and study skills, and argumentative writing skills are developed.


Grade 8 Writing & Grammar reinforces and adds another layer to parts of speech, sentence structure, usage, writing skills and study and reference skills from Grade 7. Examples of writing projects include description, exposition, narration, and persuasion.

Grade 7 Exploring Themes in Literature is arranged in 6 thematic units: love, community, transformation, justice, perseverance, patience. The Big Question with each selection provides an opportunity for worldview shaping. Over twenty genres are represented.


Grade 8 Excursions in Literature is arranged in the thematic units of friends, choices, heroes, discoveries, adventurers, and viewpoints. Several genres and cultures are represented. This book features introductory essays and “Thinking Zone” questions to introduce students to terms and concepts in literary analysis.


Grade 7 Fundamentals of Math focuses on problem solving and real-life uses of math while reinforcing computational skills and building a solid math foundation.


Grades 7-8 Pre-Algebra eases the transition from arithmetic to algebra and equips students to develop advanced math skills and strategies. Students explore relations and functions using equations, tables, and graphs. Graphing calculator instruction and spreadsheet activities help students use technology to extend their knowledge and skills to apply to life.


Grades 8-9 Algebra I teaches operations, variables and equations, solving inequalities, relations and functions, linear functions, systems of equations exponents, factoring, radicals, and quadratic equations.


Grade 7 Life Science extends scientific knowledge and lab skills. Topics include the Pattern of Life; Microorganisms and Plants; the Animal Kingdom; the Human Body; and Interacting with the Biosphere. The course content guides students through a study of biblical creation with a critique of evolutionary theory, helping them understand how science can help them defend their beliefs.


Grade 8 Earth Science guides students in an examination of God’s handiwork, affirming the creationist view of the Earth. Topics include Introduction to Earth Science; The Restless Earth; Earth’s Rocky Materials; The Water World; The Atmosphere; and The Heavens.
